Horror RP

Post by KneelBeforeZod »

So, ok, have you ever seen any standard horror film? Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Phantasm, Exorcist, whatever. How about something less campy, like Silence of the Lambs? (Not to imply that Exorcist, Halloween or the first Phantasm were campy).

Picture you guys are FBI Agents, no powers, nothing like that, your particular branch deals with paranormal mysteries, kinda like X-Files, but minus Scully being a moron. No, you guys know somethings amiss. And yeah, I don't want to give a whole lot away, but imagine all those horror names I mentioned, minus the silly schlock and bad acting. Imagine performing an autopsy on a victim of Freddy or Pinhead. Imagine researching history, and interviewing locals where the Camp Crystal Lake murders always happen, and staring death in the face every game.

Also: You guys won't encounter "the big names" every game, in fact, I don't plan on it being all THAT often...but when you do, it's a really big deal. Like you know, you might encounter a big, mentally challenged serial killer who shrugs off pain and hides in dark creepy houses, and you guys might even have a specific, routine plan to deal with those sorts...but when you actually encounter Michael Myers, it's an entirely different ballgame. In this world, things make names for themselves by being good at what they do.

So, whatcha guys think?

Now, I'm really inept at any kind of "system", and having to do math regarding people's hitpoints and all that would be ridiculous, not to mention the intent behind this game is more mystery solving than action packed. I mean, maybe your D&D character can go up against big uglies with just a sword or a trusted spell, that that'd get you ripped apart here.

So, I would really just use one d10, for everything. I'll just bullshit the monster's health, and take into account what your attack would realistically do to whatever you're up against. What do you guys think?

Read up on "After sundown." You could definitely use the setting and just have people play characters pre-origin story.

Oooh, I'll have to investigate what "After Sundown" is, thank you.

After Sundown

There is also a pdf, you can Buy it for a dollar, or BitTorrent it for free. Either way.

I would change it from FBI agents if you want a horror film vibe. The reason a retard with a kitchen knife is scary to his victims is because he is coming at baby sitters. Not highly trained commandos.

That's just my two cents. take it or leave it.

If I have the players roll up cheerleaders and babysitters, though, they'll almost always have to roll up new ones. Here, they have a moderate chance of survival.

Plus I think back to the X-Files, Silence of the Lambs, etc. They had the training to deal with situations, but they were still spooked and terrified in the field, and basically only sheer luck carried them through a few times.

The thing to do with using After Sundown with FBI agents is make sure you follow the horror rules about not bringing in more people.

IE, your particular agents may believe, or at least question the supernatural elements, but under no circumstance should they be able to convince their boss, or other agents. Instead, if you want tech/information you have to convincingly lie to get it, ect.

The U.S. isn't a democracy and if you think it is, you are a rube.

That's libertarians for you - anarchists who want police protection from their slaves.

Fair enough. I guess we are just thinking along different horror lines. I'm thinking more slasher flick, you prefer the psychological ones more.

Just out of curiosity, is it going to be retard with knife or dead serial killer coming after you in your dreams more often?

I'm thinking slasher flick from a psychological standpoint. And there's no reason why you wouldn't encounter both in this horrible world.
